UAV4Forest is dedicated to unlocking detailed insights into forest ecosystems through the power of unmanned aerial vehicles. Our core mission is to characterize and extract crucial forest parameters, with a strong emphasis on structural attributes, utilizing a diverse array of sensor technologies. From high-resolution RGB imagery to advanced LiDAR, and spanning multispectral, thermal, and microwave data, we capture a comprehensive picture of forest complexity. Employing techniques like photogrammetry, Structure from Motion, and advanced image processing, we generate detailed 3D point clouds and rich spectral information, enabling the derivation of diverse forest metrics.

 

 

We analyze forests from canopy to ground, encompassing both coniferous and deciduous species. Currently, our primary study areas focus on temperate forests, although we are expanding into applications within agricultural landscapes. We leverage existing algorithms and actively develop novel approaches related to geometric processing of UAV data and information extraction using both machine and deep learning techniques. A central tenet of our work is ensuring the extracted parameters are directly relevant to forestry practices — facilitated by ongoing communication and collaboration with foresters.

Our ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical forestry applications, bringing stakeholders together to develop solutions tailored to specific needs. Recognizing the current pressures facing forests globally, we strive to provide tools and knowledge that support sustainable forest management and resilience in a changing world.
