François Jonard  

Project Coordinator - ULiège EOSystM Lab

I am a professor of remote sensing at the University of Liège (ULiège, Belgium), where I lead the Earth Observation and Ecosystem Modelling (EOSystM) lab. My research focuses on understanding the interactions between the water and carbon cycles, particularly the impact of drought on forest ecosystem functioning. My team exploits new-generation satellite data streams, including  microwave, hyperspectral, LiDAR, and sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) data, to explore ecosystem dynamics and resilience to climate change.

Bernard Longdoz  

Project Partner - ULiège BIODYNE Lab

I’m a professor of environmental physics in the Biosystem Dynamics and Exchanges (BIODYNE) research lab within the TERRA research unit at the University of Liège, where I lead investigations into ecosystem services under climate change. My research examines how ecophysiological processes governing carbon, water, energy, and nitrogen budgets respond to environmental drivers, with a particular focus on photosynthesis and soil respiration. During my tenure at INRAE (France), I refined eddy covariance methodology for measuring net CO₂ ecosystem exchange and contributed to the establishment of ICOS, the European research infrastructure coordinating flux measurement stations across multi-site networks.

Ivan Janssens  

Project Partner - UAntwerp PLECO Lab

Professor Ivan Janssens works at the biology department at the University of Antwerp, more specifically the Plants and Ecosystems (PLECO) research group, within the global change ecology excellence cluster. His work centers on understanding how ecosystems function and respond to major environmental changes such as climate change, nutrient dynamics, and carbon cycling, with implications for predicting future ecosystem services and informing sustainable environmental policy. Janssens also plays a prominent role in large research infrastructure, through the ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) program. His research spans field studies, ecosystem monitoring, and collaborative projects within European research programs.

Quentin Beauclaire  

Postdoctoral Researcher - ULiège BIODYNE Lab

I'm a postdoctoral researcher in the Biosystem Dynamics and Exchanges (BIODYNE) research lab within the TERRA research unit at the University of Liège. My work examines how vegetation responds to climate change through gas exchange and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. I specialize in mechanistic vegetation modelling, eddy covariance methods, and hyperspectral remote sensing. My doctoral research explored crop physiological responses to drought stress, where I developed new modelling frameworks that integrate fluorescence signals with photosynthesis and transpiration processes across the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum.

Simon De Cannière  

Postdoctoral Researcher - ULiège EOSystM Lab & UAntwerp PLECO Lab

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Liège and the University of Antwerp, working at the interface of plant physiology, remote sensing, and ecosystem ecology. My research focuses on advancing our understanding of the coupling between the carbon and water cycles through the use of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and eddy covariance flux measurements. In addition to ground-based approaches, I actively investigate the potential of satellite-based SIF measurements, such as those provided by TROPOMI and the upcoming FLEX mission, to scale ecosystem-level findings to larger spatial domains.

Matthias Cuntz  

Project Partner - INRAE (France)

Matthias Cuntz is a Directeur de Recherche at INRAE (Institut National de Recherche pour l’Agriculture, l’Alimentation et l’Environnement) in Nancy, France. He received his PhD in physics (Heidelberg) and has subsequently been working in atmospheric physics (Paris), biology (Canberra), biogeochemical cycles (Jena), and hydrology (Leipzig). He is the PI of the ICOS class 1 ecosystem site FR-Hes and is key developer of the ecosystem model MuSICA as well as of the global land surface model CABLE-POP. This allows him to combine measurements and modelling to understand and describe mathematically the processes behind the exchanges between the biosphere and the atmosphere, scaling from single leaves over fluxes measured and modelled at ecosystems up to the continental and global scale.

Jan De Pue  

Project Partner - IRM

Jan De Pue is a postdoctoral researcher in the land surface modelling group of the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI). He has a background in soil physics, hydrological modelling and vegetation modelling. Currently, his research focusses on land surface modelling with SURFEX for numerical weather prediction and climate simulations at RMI, as well as the development and maintenance of the LSA SAF evapotranspiration product, relying on EUMETSAT Meteosat observations.
